1. The scene that stood out to the most was the scene where the citizens were complaining about how the anti-cartel vigilante group were conducting house raids and yanking people from cars. The group also tortured people for information. This stood out to me because this group of people banded together so that the people could fight back and stop the harassment they were receiving from the cartels, but they were starting to act out some of the same things that the cartel were doing.
This made me wonder whether or not this group were actually helping people towards the end of the documentary because the people that lived there did not want their help, and they were looting houses. It also raised question whether or not this group wanted to free the people from the cartel or take revenge upon the cartel. The group even allowed the cartel members that surrendered to join the group. I felt like that was an insult to injury because they let the very people that they were against join their cause. I believe the group became side tracked and lost their way ultimately hurting their own cause and even their own leader began to become corrupt.
2. What surprised me the most was the ending. The group basically flip flopped their whole ideals and purpose of their movement. At the end of the documentary the group joined the government. The group started out as a group that was fighting back because they felt that they were being mistreated by the cartel and their government. This was the most surprising thing because the group even exiled their old leader leading to his arrest. The group also began to divide and become corrupt themselves, and pretty much became the very thing that they were fighting against.
3. A few questions I had were: Why did the group join the government?, What happened to the group?, what happened to the people that supported the old group?, Why and how long will the doctor be in prison?, and why did the group stop helping the citizens? These questions raised during and after the film. This group took a huge right turn from what originally started out as. The group did a lot of territory claim in order to take the cartels influence away and then just abandoned their original purpose.
The feeling that I had after watching this film was not anger or sadness but confusion. I was confused
on how or what made the group change, and whether or not if it was the power that they amassed or was it the the profits that they were receiving. This made me wonder if the group cared about the people anymore. The change in the group actions really did impact the story of the film. It really shows how people can change unexpectedly due to their circumstances. The change was unexpected because the group was so passionate about taking their city back and receiving justice, and for the group to take such a turn it makes you question whether or not their true intention was to save themselves.
4. Some concepts that I felt that were problematic were: The fact that the group kidnapped and tortured people, the way the group allowed ex cartel members to join the group, the house raids, and the groups assimilation. I feel like these few things were the most problematic because I believe it was the things that led to this groups demise. The group kidnapped and tortured people in order to gain information. I feel like this is an conflict of interest because they are doing the very thing that the cartel does and on top of that the people they take may or may not be associated with the cartel. The second concept that I believe hurt them was the fact that they let the ex cartel members join the group. This is the opposite thing you should do because now the other side can split up you group, which is what happened
The third thing that was problematic was the house raids. The house raids were supposedly done on ex cartel members homes in order to gain the items that were taken from the group but in actuality it was just a way to cover up stealing. The last thing that was problematic was the fact that the group joined the government. It would have been a good thing if the group did not change their ideals but the group joined the government and became corrupt and ended up not helping the civilians anymore than the cartel or police did.
